Additional Info: I am a full-time composer, music educator and community musician. I have a substantial list of compositions with works recorded and played in many parts of the world. I am adept at orchestral, choral and chamber music arranging and I develop music with young people for professional public performance. I enjoy directing orchestras and have frequently conducted my own and other’s music.

Please see my website at:

I studied at the Royal College of Music in London [GRSM, ARCM], taught in Coventry, and played for the Ulster Orchestra and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. During four years in Belfast I wrote a handful of pieces, including Brass Quintet 'The Age of Bronze' and Violin piece 'Paths of the Mystic Rose', but on joining the RLPO in 1980 my composition output increased. RLPS commissioned 'Welcome Carol', orchestral drama 'Soundcastle', jazz rap 'Hot House' and the oratorio 'Lowlands Away', for which I was awarded the 1996 Merseyside Arts and Entertainments Award.
Other commissions include 'Zoo Suite', (Brass Octet & Orchestral versions), the Percussion Sextet 'Engineerium' (RNCM), Brass Octets 'Festival Fanfare' and 'Fantasia', Ballet for Wind Orchestra 'The Bacchae', orchestral Arts Suite 'Hotfoot On Hope Street' (HOPES), Flute Quartet 'Orison to the Wind' and for National Orchestra Week 1999 'Overture NOW!' Choral/Orchestral works 'Trade Winds' Op.42, 'Liverpool First and Last' Op.44 and 'Café Europe' Op.46 were also all commissioned by The Hope Street Association. Sefton Youth Orchestra commissioned 'The Voice of This Calling' Op.45 in 2008, and the six String Quartet Movements of 'Thus Spoke Tagore' Op.48 were written for the 2010 visit to England of the Indian Chau Dancers of Perulia. The latter commission led to my cultural research visit to India in 2011 to play with the Baul muiscians in Kolkata and in Nadia, W. Bengal. I have written much other chamber music, including a String Quartet, and a Clarinet Quartet; I am presently engaged in writing a Nonet for performance in London later this year.

I have appeared on CD as Conductor of the Saurang Orchestra, with Surinder Sandhu and other renowned Indian musicians. My orchestration of Sandhu’s music is also available on disc. My music has been played in many parts of the world, including Europe, America, Africa and Japan, and has been broadcast on radio and television. I lecture on Music and Creativity and conduct orchestras and ensembles. I am a member of PRS, MCPS, and the British Music Writers Council.

A CD of my music: ‘Lowlands Away’ [RLCD 303] RLPO-LIVE label, is available from HMV or online at RLPS
