Additional Info: Jonathan Rabson composes mostly tonal, melodic, highly listenable music, with a strong emphasis placed on memorability, good proportions, timing, and logic. Despite its simplicity and accessibility, his music involves many innovative techniques and a tendency to rethink musical fundamentals and formal structures. He commonly employs gradual fluctuations in tempo combined with metric modulations, as well as transformations and juxtapositions between highly different kinds of music. The character and style of his music is highly varied, but it frequently reflects a love of nature, philosophical curiosity, and a sense of humor.

Mr. Rabson has been composing since the age of 7. He was the recipient of a number of awards as a high school student, including a BMI Student Composer Award at the age of 15, and an award sponsored by Universal Studios. He studied with Samuel Adler, who at the time was chairman of the composition department at the Eastman School of Music. He also studied with Pulitzer Prize recipients William Bolcom and Leslie Bassett, as well as Fred Lerdahl and William Albright at the University of Michigan, where he earned a Bachelors and Master’s degree in composition.

Mr. Rabson’s music has been frequently used by the Christian dance group Pointes of Faith, and he has written music for several independent films, which have been screened at various film festivals, including the Park City Film Music Festival, the Tel Aviv International Student Film Festival, the World Music and Independent Film Festival, and the American International Film Festival.

Some of his performances within the last few years have included appearing as a guest soloist at a faculty recital at the California State University, Stanislaus, and as a guest conductor at a choral concert called “Sing Together” in Toronto. An avid improviser, some of Mr. Rabson’s most musically successful works came to life as improvisations that he plays for his wife as she’s going to sleep. In addition to his musical activities, Mr. Rabson is also a freelance software developer and writer.
